Decriminalisation of Homosexuality in India (Timeline)
There was a time when a section of society was being punished for expressing their sexuality and sexual preferences. It took almost 17 years to the group of activists for making equal rights accessible to the LGBTQIA community. In Navtej Singh Johar vs Union of India, Supreme Court held Section 377 as violative to Article 14 and declared the provision discriminatory. Through the decriminalization, the court upheld the ideals and morals of the Constitution that aims to create an inclusive society. However, the step of decriminalization is not the end, it's the means to an end of long age discrimination and providing basic natural rights to the community. In the end we need to understand that, this is not an issue that is just to be dealt by Courts and Parliament, rather it is our responsibility as citizens to be conscious about our own thoughts, behaviour and actions towards the LGBTQIA community. #pridemonthcampaign #RightsBeyondIdentities #pride🌈 #history #historicorder #decriminalising
